[bɪəd], Charles Austin, amerikanischer Historiker und Publizist, * bei Knightstown (Indiana) 27. 11. 1874, ✝ New Haven (Conneticut) 1. 9. 1948; interpretierte aus dem Geist des Progressive Movement in einflussreichen Werken die Entstehung der amerikanischen Verfassung von 1787, die demokratische Bewegung von T. Jefferson sowie den Sezessionskrieg aus wirtschaftlichen Interessenlagen, distanzierte sich aber später vom ökonomischen Determinismus. Die interventionistische Außenpolitik F. D. Roosevelts kritisierte er heftig vom Standpunkt eines »Amerikanischen Kontinentalismus«.
